The treatment approach used is wide-ranging, utilising techniques from a variety of theories to best complement your needs and personality. Our approach is to work from the perspective that therapy is a collaborative effort, in which the therapist and client(s) share the responsibility for the outcome. We will build a specific counselling approach around you, within an empathetic, passionate and supportive environment.
Unify Counselling utilises several areas of therapy:
- Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
- Solution Focused Brief Therapy
- Narrative Therapy
- Person Centred Therapy
- Gestalt Therapy
We also strictly practice by the obligations set out in the Australian Counselling Association Code of Ethics and by the Unregistered Health Practitioners' Code of Conduct
What to expect
It will be quite normal to feel anxious and somewhat apprehensive about attending a counselling session, especially if you are going to talk to someone you have only just met about your personal feelings and concerns.
With this in mind it is important for you to know that it is the counsellor's role to make you feel comfortable and at ease. The counsellor is on your side and wants to help you. Your first counselling session is a very big step and you should be proud of yourself for taking it, but most people will discover it is much easier than they had imagined.
During your first session, which is generally about 90 minutes, your counsellor will gather some background information, talk about the issues and concerns that you have, discuss what you want to achieve from these sessions as well as talk about options and therapies. Please feel free to ask your counsellor any questions you might have as well.
One some occasions your issues or concerns may be resolved in only one session and you may be very satisfied to leave it at that. If however, you and the counsellor agree that the issue is not resolved then further sessions will be arranged. These follow up sessions are generally 60 minutes each time.
During a normal follow up session your counsellor will continue to discuss the issue or concern, monitor progress and provide specific techniques or skills to apply in your daily life as well as allocating specific tasks to be done between sessions
